After a number of years of being a remote moose camp hand for my son Andrew/Marsh River Outfitters and Dave Conley/Canoe the Wild I finally put the effort in and got my guides license last year.   My son, Andrew, put me to work guiding bear hunters late summer and then this fall I took my first moose hunters out for the October season. I was matched up with Jeff Updegrove and Chris Buck of Pennsylvania and it was a good fit.  I made a plan for opening morning and we got in about 40 minutes before legal shooting.  It was good we did because someone else pulled about 30 minutes after we arrived.   From the swear word I heard it’s safe to say they were not happy but they got back in their truck and left.  As it began to get light we started our way quietly on foot to our destination.  When it was possible to see about 100 yds I started some light cow calling.    We stopped about every 100 to 200 yds or so listening, light calling, and racking of alders.    We repeated this several times over the distance of a little over a mile.    I was racking some trees when Chris spotted a bull coming right at us.    Jeff had told me he was going home with moose and was going to shoot the first one he saw.    I told him I would give him advice, but the decision to make the shot was going to be totally up to him. This bull was behind the trees to me, and he asked me if it was a good one.  I slowly leaned to my right towards him and could see the bull.  I told him it was a decent one and the shot was up to him. He took aim and the two shot a split second apart dropping this ball at 115 yards at 8:41am.  Jeff did some dancing and we took some pictures, he even gave me a hug. Now being over a mile from the truck, there was an obstruction we had to conquer, which was a huge hole in the ground making the road impossible pass. After the pictures we began the walk back to the truck to evaluated how we would get there without having to pack the moose over a mile.    Jeff suggested he could fill the hole with rocks so we could drive over it I was skeptical he could find enough rocks but Chris and I continued back to get my truck and the pack frames.  I was hoping also to maybe get message out the the other guides that we had one down. We got back to Jeff’s location about 45 minutes later and to my surprise he had completely filled the hole and I was able to carefully drive right over the huge hole.  This enable to me to get my truck right to the place where he shot from and now it was only a115 yard pack out. It was a good experience, and I think I made some lifelong friends with these two.  Jeff’s moose had a 32 1/4 spread and i guessed it was around 700 lbs.    For the 2023 two week split season we as a group when 9 for 10.   I am proud to be a part of such a professionally run remote moose camp.   Thank you Andrew for having faith in me.
