The start of the 2nd week of the 2018 Maine Turkey hunting season. Noah and I had been seeing birds pretty consistently in a field we scouted and was successful getting permission to hunt. That evening we roosted 3 Toms and 2 hens and we were feeling pretty confident something good was gonna happen in the morning.  As usual 100 different scenarios were played out and a plan was in place. 3am comes quick during Turkey season as it seems I just closed my eyes, knowing our scenario though We were ready! 3:15am out the door we go. Set both on the ground in good cover, a strutting Tom decoy in front of us we waited still for that first gobble! 4:24am BAM there he is first gobble, we enjoyed triple gobbles by 3 Toms until flydown.....now it’s game on......they barely gobbled the 10 minutes and no site of them entering the field as we were tucked in the wood line. I gave soft random yelps to remind the birds we were here but was hoping B-Mobil would be my selling point.....then I hear Noah whisper “right there dad, I see there tail fans” the birds worked slowly side by side both strutting, working the hen down the wood line. Both the Toms seems interested and stayed committed to slowly work toward us....The lead strutter makes his way into my gun range and works about 10yds outside the decoy at 25yds, normally I’d shoot but we had his buddy trailing behind working to us and was hoping for a double. The trailing Tom then cuts into the woods at about 35yds and is looking for the hen that was making the soft yelps, then the lead birds cuts back and follows his buddy into the woods suddenly things became a little iffy. I didn’t want to take any marginal shots and risk spooking or wounding a bird so we watched the birds strut and gobble quickly to about 50-60yds out of range. After about 25-30 minutes the birds walked up the field away from us. Luckily having scouted I knew where the birds wanted to go......quickly scurrying once the birds were out of site we did a big loop through the woods and settled in to option B. I let out a few soft yelps from the Woods and BAM they gobbled not far away at all...I backed up from Noah started to make a few more yelps with purrs......BOOM! “Longbeard down” Great hunt with my son!! He’s an awesome hunter
