Opening day off the roost. With another tom. Then a hen came out and pulled them away. I worked the bearded hen and she came in and attacked the lone hen decoy and layed down beside it. Then she attacked it again and layed down. I whispered to my friend (new to hunting and never shot a mature bird) that they were going to come in fast. It worked perfect. They came to within 5 yards in front of my friend. I was waiting to hear him shoot and didn't even raise my shotgun. Finally I heard the click of the trigger without a shot, the racking of the pump action... Click again. This is when I pulled my shotgun up and safety off. I heard him rack another round in and again "click". He stood up all flustered. I took the bird at 20 yards running away from me. I cleared the spent shell and loaded the next round in my supernova. I called very aggressively and had my cross hairs on the other big tom at 30 yards but had the safety back on looking at my buddy to see why he wasn't shooting. The birds cleared out and weade our way out of the shadows to see what I had harvested. First thing I noticed was it had big double beards. But upon further inspection I found 2 more up towards his neck. A true bird of a lifetime. Once we got the pictures out of the way it took over 4 hours on the phone to find certified scales to be scored for MASTCs. It took the rest of the day but the bird scored 78.875 nontypical.
We also brought the 3 rounds out of my buddies gun to safe location to see why his gun didn't fire. It turns out he wasn't racking the pump action far enough ahead to close it completely. From now on he will always me known as my short armed friend.
