“Half Rack”.....  In 2014, we sold our family farm on 20 acres, which contained my favorite hunting spot, to my son Justin and his family. Years before, we had made a small food plot and my dad had built me a really cool blind out of some old wooden spools. I had previously shot a few deer from that spot, including my very first deer.  When the kids bought the place, they told me, “don’t worry... you’re “grandmothered” for your hunting spot.” So, I took them up on it that year. On this evening, we had just had a snowstorm. We got a few inches and a young tree that still had a lot of leaves on it had fallen down into the food plot. Just before dark, I saw a deer approach and walk up to the fallen tree and start feeding on the leaves. I didn’t have a doe permit that year and there were only minutes to go left of legal time. As soon as I saw antlers, or in this case, I guess I only saw one antler, I fired.
He ran about 50 yards and died. My husband was once again away on his hunting trip up north, But Justin was hunting close enough to know it was me that had fired and he called and came over and helped me get him out. That was the last deer I shot out of that blind, but I have a lot of very fond memories from that spot.
