I was pretty proud of this deer for 2 reasons... Even though he was small, he was my first buck. And secondly, He was the first one I ever shot on the run. I was waiting to meet up with my husband John on an old tote road. He was headed my way through a grown up chopping full of jack firs.  I heard him holler way in the distance.... “BUCK, BUCK, BUCK!!” I later found out that he had jumped a big buck and it was headed in my general direction. Just after that, I saw what I thought were 3 does running my way. I pulled up and shot and knocked one down. (the big buck never came my way) A few minutes later John came hurrying my way expecting to see that big buck on the ground. At that point I knew nothing about any big buck... I was feeling pretty proud of myself for hitting one on the run! Just about that time, John exclaimed... “You aren’t going to believe what I just (*expletive*) did!?!” Which he went on to tell me... It seems when he jumped that big buck, he pulled up to shoot, only to discover that he had never loaded his gun. He was as disgusted with himself as I was proud of myself... His raving and no mention of my deer laying there, took the wind right out of my sails and I started crying 😭 It wasn’t funny at the time, but I think it is hilarious now... I never even got a picture him.
