After a long week because of a family emergency my wife encouraged me to go hunting for a couple hours. Since my wife is recovering from some recent procedures, I asked my mother in law to stay with her for a couple hours. My wife said " I have a good feeling". I got to my blind by 3pm and hunkered in for the short wait until the end of legal shooting time. The area I was hunting is a funnel to the corner of a field. I sat in my blind and by 4:18 I got out of my blind to check the side of the field I couldn't see. Normally a doe or two out by now but nothing this time. I got back into my blind. After 5 more minutes I heard something to my left in the woods. I played it off as squirrels as they have messed with me all season. To my surprise a small doe entered the field just 15 yards from the blind. She looked my way but was well adjusted to my blind being there. She nervously continued into the field. Too small to shoot, I passed on her, but she kept looking behind. I then heard a small grunt. About that time a larger deer entered the field from the left corner, chest all puffed out and standing tall. I put the scope on him and saw antlers. Not having tagged a deer in 4 years I didn't hesitate to consider a shot. He immediately started to trot toward the doe. From my voice I gave a quick "maahh" and stopped him in his tracks. One shot from the .270 Ruger 150 grain and the basket rack 8 point didn't go far. Not my biggest deer by far, but possibly the most memorable. And honestly the older I get I don't mind the easier drag! I called my wife. She was beyond excited. She said "I knew it". My buddy joined me in the field to provide some light from his Jeep so I could get the buck field dressed. After that we loaded him up and I made my rounds to show my father in law, mother and back the house then tagging station. What a gift.  I love being able to provide healthy game meat for us and this deer is the perfect size. I also love that my wife is so appreciative of the meat and doesn't turn her nose up to it. She honestly can cook venison better than anyone I know. We are so grateful and blessed.
