This deer was again shot at the family land in Northport, Maine. I had passed on this buck on opening day thinking I would see something bigger. Boy was I wrong. I learned after that sometimes you take what is given. With only two days left in the season I was lucky enough to see this buck again. On the afternoon of Friday the 27th, he came into the field from the left corner where the Wolfriver apple tree was. I watched him freshen a scrape under that apple tree and lick a branch above. It was the first time I witnessed a buck do that in person.  I made up my mind that I would shoot him but watched him longer than I needed hoping he would come closer. When he turned and got closer he stopped. He was facing me head on at a slight angle. With little daylight and using the borrowed 30/30 Marlin, I took a shot. I knew I hit him as he humped up but wasn't confident where I hit him. He headed into the woods to my right. I waited for just a few minutes. There was no blood so I started to worry. My fear subsided when I found him laying under a fir tree about 45 yards in. I had hit him forward of the front right shoulder in the chest, just 3 or 4 ribs in. I must have got just enough.  The rack on this 8 point looked similar growth wise to the personal best shot the year before. Very fortunate to have been able to hunt this property.
