I drew this Elk tag and did a ton of scouting plus I have hunted the unit since I started hunting so I knew it really well. My dad and I found this wallow years ago and swore we would hunt it the next time we drew. we did two different times and learned how to hunt it better. So I went in and hung a trail camera in June when it was opened up. I was getting a lot of good bulls coming in. so in early August I went in and hung a tree stand on the wallow. opening day I went in about 1pm and changed clothes and settled in. about 3-6 elk were coming through just not coming to the wallow never saw any of the big bulls and about 6:30 I got rained out. I geared back up and went back in a little earlier around 12pm. Again changed clothes and was ready for the rain and long haul.about 5 I had a couple spikes and cows walk with in 10 yards and boy was that tempting.around 6-6:30 I heard something to my right and saw some cows messing around and when I looked back this bull was standing at the edge of the wallow.Already having ranged the spots I knew he was 17 yards. He looked away I drew back and put my 20 yard pin on his heart. I watched my lumenok bury in there. he jumped and ran off and watched him fall 40 yards off. I was ecstatic as I was walking up to him I tried calling my dad and knowing I didn't have service just hoping it would go through. wouldn't you know it the call went through and I got to talk to my dad as I walked up to him and the call was clear as day. So I took this time to say hey I am gonna need help in the a.m. getting him out lol. I tried calling my wife nothing. So I got back to camp after quartering him up and hanging him in a tree about 12 a.m. I met a super cool guy that weekend that I still talk to to this day. he was planning on leaving about mid afternoon as it was his bday and wedding anniversary but when I didn't show up he stuck around to make sure I was ok. Dad and my uncle and cousin showed up the next morning and we made a quick trip in and got him out in one trip.
