This deer is a special one for us. Isaiah 16 has been trying for a whitetail since around the age of 7 , I’d been taking him to New Hampshire and hunting Maine. It seemed as it may never happen. Isaiah being the young man he is always let his brothers go before him , and always being dedicated to his sports. He’d only hunt 3-4 days out of a the season, his eye sight doesn’t help but we overcame all of it. We have realized that Isaiah would probably have to find one in a field or a decent opening , as he has hard time picking them out of thick cover. Our friends own a rather large green field and allow us to sit in it . We were sitting in the blind listening to the ducks and geese that had landed in a puddle in a low spot in the field. We were watching a doe and 2 fawns on the far end of the field feeding , when I noticed movement closer to us. I swung with the binoculars and could see some bone coming into the field. I elbowed Isaiah and said there is a buck in the field , I could hear his voice get shaky and ask “where” , I said to the right side of the field . He anchors down on his browning 7mm08 and is scanning the field , I can tell he has gone past it. I’m like bud back the other way……. He starts to scan back and I see him stop……. Breathing gets heavy……Dad… I can see it. I can shoot it , I’m on him. I’m like bud he is facing us , let him step broadside . But I can hit him dad ….. I know buddy but we have plenty of time . Just be ready for when he steps broadside. Feels like forever and then the magical 2 steps happen. I hear the safety go off and baaaa boom. I watch the buck hump up, rear up on hind legs and completely do a back flip and land in a huge puddle . He was like dad I missed it , I can see water flying. Crying already I told him that he had not missed and the water flying was his deer flopping around. Huge hugs and dads tears flowing we make our way to the deer. Moments like this are ones that I’ll hold forever. He made a beautiful 185 yard shot , for his first whitetail ever.
