Harvested this yearling cow elk under unique circumstances.  She had fallen over a fence and broken her leg (and her neck/skull, I suspect).  Having a B tag for elk in Montana, I chose to put her out of her suffering.  Sorry for the graphic photo, but it was the only one I managed to get since it was late in the evening.

Thanks, John! Getting one with a bow is an adrenaline rush for sure.  

They are actually one of the more "reasonably" priced western hunts (unless you hunt Arizona or New Mexico from what I hear).  If I remember correctly, both Wyoming and Montana are about $300 for the license and tag (which is good for either sex).  Montana can be difficult to draw in (I've never checked Wyoming draw statistics) depending on what region you go for.  Region 7 gives non-residents a decent shot at drawing, though.

It's got to be such a charge getting that close to an animal that large. 

The night before, a 6x6 (I'm guessing) came to about 75 yards, but the deadfalls were too thick and he just wasn't interested enough to push through.  This worked in my favor because I got out my "buck fever" (even though he was an elk...) on that one.  It was pretty epic when this guy charged in to my friend's calling.  Took a while for it to sink in once that arrow flew! 

Sounds super exciting.
One day I will get out there under your skies.
